The castle was the last residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, whose assassination in Sarajevo started World War I. The castle was originally built in the 13th century as a Gothic fortification, but Archduke Ferdinand had it rebuilt into a luxurious residence that is now open to the public. Visitors can view the residential rooms of Franz Ferdinand, a large collection of his hunting trophies, an armoury with medieval weapons, a shooting hall with moving targets and a large garden with Italian Renaissance statues.
